Grundy Electric Cooperative Announces winners of the Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience (C.Y.C.L.E.) Essay Contest

April 8, 2010 - Trenton, MO - Area high school students recently participated in an essay opportunity sponsored by Grundy Electric Cooperative. The top nine participants from Mercer, Grundy, and Harrison Counties were selected from a group of high school juniors who wrote essays on the topic, "Our Energy, Our Future." Three of these students will represent GEC in Jefferson City this summer by attending the Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience (CYCLE).

Mercer County representatives include Princeton residents Jamee Richardson, first place, granddaughter of Ann Shroyer; LeAnna Ellison, second place, daughter of Joe and Bobbie Herrity; Katie Sponsler, third place, daughter of Mike and Shellie Sponsler. Representatives from Gundy County include Trenton residents Courtney Leeper, first place, daughter of Dale and Carol Leeper; Turner Cotton, second place, son of Richard and Jane Cotton; and Samantha Hudson, third place, daughter of Steve and Lora Hudson. Harrison County representatives include Shane DeHaas of Ridgeway, first place, son of Linda DeHaas; Sydney Lawrence of Blythedale, second place, daughter of Paula Hutton and Jeff Lawrence; and Rilee Ellis of Eagleville, third place, son of Wesley and Angela Ellis.

The youth leadership opportunity was open to any current high school junior attending a school located in one of the 12 counties served by Grundy Electric Cooperative. These counties include Mercer, Harrison, Grundy, Linn, Livingston, Sullivan, Putnam, Gentry, Daviess counties in Missouri, and Wayne, Decatur and Ringgold counties in Iowa. Each participant was required to submit a typewritten 1000-word essay. Judging was based on originality and subject knowledge.

Approximately 85 delegates from across the state will attend the all-expense paid Leadership Conference to be held July 14-16, 2010, in Jefferson City, Missouri. The conference focus will show students more about electric cooperatives, teach leadership skills, and allow them to experience Missouri state government. The Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience received the 2006 National Cooperative Youth Program Award. The award is given to the program that base demonstrates service to the local communities. Programs from across the nation competed for this valued award.

Grundy Electric Cooperative to Sponsor Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience for Area High School Juniors

Trenton, MO., December 18, 2009 – Grundy Electric Cooperative (GEC) announces that it will sponsor an essay opportunity for three area youth to represent GEC and their school on a trip to the 2010 Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience (C.Y.C.L.E.) to be held July 14-16, 2010 in Jefferson City, Missouri. High school juniors whose parents reside within Grundy Electric Cooperative’s service territory are eligible.

The three-day conference brings together some of the brightest young leaders from across Missouri. The focus is to teach students more about electric cooperatives, enhance leadership skills and experience Missouri state government. The program includes nationally known speakers and a day at the state Capitol. There is also time for some fun things like an outdoor barbecue and team competitions in various events such as the “Build a Cooperative” game.

Students will be required to submit a typewritten, double-spaced 1,000 word essay on the subject, “Our Energy Our Future”. The essay must be original, show subject knowledge with correct grammar and be neat in appearance.
