April 9, 2009 Trenton, MO. – Area high school students recently participated in an essay contest sponsored by Grundy Electric Cooperative. The top nine winners from three geographic areas were selected from a group of high school juniors who wrote essays on the topic, “Our Energy, Our Future”. Three of these students will represent GEC in Jefferson City this summer by attending the Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience (CYCLE).

Area #1 winners include William Letner of Harris, first place; Alisa Funk of Princeton, second place; and Brittany Graham of Lineville, Iowa third place. Winners from Area #2 include Shelby Muff of Trenton, first place; Brian Sager of Trenton, second place and Shelby Hatcher of Galt, third place. Area #3 winners include Wyatt Price of Ridgeway, first place; Jessie Joiner of Ridgeway second place and Chelsea Howe of Gilman City, third place.

The youth leadership contest was open to any current high school junior attending a school located in one of the 12 counties served by Grundy Electric Cooperative. These counties include Mercer, Harrison, Grundy, Linn, Livingston, Sullivan, Putnam, Gentry, Daviess counties in Missouri and Wayne, Decatur and Ringgold counties in Iowa. Each contestant was required to submit a typewritten 1000 word essay. Judging was based on originality and subject knowledge.

Approximately 90 delegates from across the state will attend the all-expense paid Leadership Conference to be held July 15-17, 2009 in Jefferson City, Missouri. The conference focus will show students more about electric cooperatives, teach leadership skills and allow them to experience Missouri state government. The Cooperative Youth Conference and Leadership Experience received the 2006 National Cooperative Youth Program Award. The award is given to the program that best demonstrates service to the local communities. Programs from across the nation competed for this valued award.
