C.L. Vestal and Jason Pipes work hard
clearing brush and trees from GEC’s ROW.
Maintaining the right-of-way (ROW) is very important to Grundy Electric Cooperative and to our member-owners. Our ROW Clearing Program is designed to reduce contact between trees and power lines as much as possible. Tree limbs touching lines can sometimes cause blinks affecting sensitive electronic devices such as clocks, VCRs or personal computers. Trimming trees and spraying is necessary to keep these annoyances to a minimum. Trees and brush can also cause outages, which are expensive for the cooperative and a major inconvenience to our members. With over 2,100 miles of line, Grundy Electric’s right-of-way crew works year-round trimming trees during the fall and winter and spraying brush in the spring and summer.
Beginning in May, ROW crews will begin applying high volume foliage spray. Operations Manager, Allen Berry stated, “This summer, our Right-of-Way Crews will concentrate their efforts within Harrison and Mercer County spraying foliage, trimming and clearing trees within our 40 foot easement. Only primary lines which supply power to the transformer will be cleared. We hope to complete the foliage application by mid-September.” Right-of-way clearing is an unending task that ROW crews perform daily to help improve the quality of service and reliability for our members.
Please do not plant trees under or near the cooperative’s lines. If you see a tree touching or in danger of falling into an electric line, or if you have any questions, please contact Grundy Electric Cooperative’s Operations Department at 660-359-3941 or 1-800-279-2249. By working together we can greatly improve our chances of weathering future storms.
