December 2007 Ice Storm
Rural Missouri February, 2008

As a widespread ice storm began to blanket northwest Missouri and southern Iowa, Grundy Electric had a large number of members awake without service on Tuesday December 11, with the number of outages dropping considerably each day. As of December 18, power had been restored to all members.

We take this opportunity to thank all of our Cooperative Member-Owners who were without electric service for your patience and kind words. Our dedicated employees worked long hours under extreme conditions, with only brief rest periods, while you dealt with adverse conditions without electricity. A total of ten crews, 29 additional men, from other cooperatives assisted in the restoration process. Those crews included: Osage Valley of Butler, Webster Electric of Marshfield, Northeast Power of Palmyra, Howard Electric of Fayette, Macon Electric of Macon, and Farmers Electric of Chillicothe. A crew from Trenton Municipal Utilities also assisted. These additional crews made a huge difference in the time it took to get members back on.

Outages occurred across Grundy’s entire service area with the bulk of outages concentrated in Harrison, Mercer and Grundy County. By December 16, the largest part of the outages were reduced to individual outages. Crews worked feverishly until restoration efforts were complete. “We know that ice storms are devastating, and being without electricity is a real hardship however, we would like to express our sincere appreciation for the patience and understanding of our member-owners during this disaster,” stated co-op manager Scott Wilson.

Ice Storm Hits Grundy Electric

December 11, 2007 - Grundy Electric Cooperative has multiple electrical outages across its service area. The Cooperative estimates that currently 1500 members are without electricity.

Grundy Electric crews are working diligently to restore power. Early today Grundy contacted their statewide organization: Association of Missouri Electric Cooperatives located in Jefferson City and requested assistance from other cooperatives. Currently crews are being sent from Osage Valley Cooperative of Butler, Webster Electric of Marshfield, Northeast Power of Palmyra and Howard Electric Cooperative of Fayette, Missouri. These crews will assist Grundy Electric in restoring power as quickly as possible to its member-owners.

Grundy Electric encourages members to be extremely careful around downed power lines, and contact the Cooperative immediately. They also advise caution with generators, which can send current into power lines if they are not connected properly.

Ice storms are always devastating, thus we request that members check with neighbors to ensure their safety. Also, members should make the necessary arrangements if they have a member on a life support system and are without power.

We would like to thank our member-owners for their patience during this ice storm. Everyone at Grundy Electric is working together to make sure the power gets back as soon as possible. Estimates on when power will be fully restored are not yet available.

Grundy Electric Cooperatives service area spans Harrison, Grundy and Mercer county and portions of Daviess, Livingston, Linn, Gentry, Putnam and Sullivan county in Missouri and portions of Wayne, Decatur, and Ringgold county in Iowa.
